JAFAX 2010 + good ol' fashion advice please?

:star-empty: NEWS :star-empty:

This year was plenty full of hits and misses for me. I missed out on going to some really awesome places, thanks to the unsubstantial income from previous events leading to me becoming flat broke. However, I have some special plans built for next year and JAFAX is one of them. Because the university campus is close to home, I'll be able to contribute and hopefully participate in the expo.

How will I do this? Artist Alley of course!

Despite the table sign-ups being well over 6 months away, I'd like to (slowly) get started on working on some stuff that would deem favorable to sell. Stickers, bookmarks, and prints are a sure thing and possibly buttons? ( If I can invest in a maker. )
As for what Anime series I'd like to focus on, I'm going to avoid doing mostly obvious and mainstream ( Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, etc. ) and instead mix it up with some old skool ( Bubble Gum Crisis, Robotech, Dominion Tank Police ) and some new skool ( D.Gray Man, VOCALOID ( even though it's not exactly an anime series ) )

I know I sound over zealous talking about it, but I feel pretty confident that If I get my materials together I'll be able to get in with no troubles.

I don't know how many of you watchers are from the area or even know about the expo, but if there's some bits of advice you'd like to throw out in general I'd love to read them!

My Paypal e-mail is Bittermause@gmail.com

Due to personal circumstance, I will not start up a comission piece unless I am paid in full first. If there are any problems please e-mail me and we can negotiate.

Only subjects I will not/cannot draw are the following: pornography, gundam-style mechs, hardcore fetish art. I'm cool with requests for artistic nudity, as long as it is in good taste.

Also I've noticed a couple times in the past people will request work to be done and suddenly disappear without mentioning if they changed their mind or not, and they are still obviously active. Please don't be rude guys. It's not hard to say 'I'm sorry I changed my mind.' and I know DA's note system can be dysfunctional so getting a hold of me via e-mail is not hard either. Or for the sake of skipping out on possible misunderstanding woes, please think carefully on what you want before you contact me. I'm not going to bite your head off if you decide you don't want my services. I promise!

If interested, please e-mail me at bittermause@gmail.com and place 'comissions' under the subject.

Wish I could go and support you, but it being 6months away who knows? :)
:iconludicrousbox:
I hate to be really apathetic toward the scene, but honestly, based on what I've seen from friends and fellow artists trying to sell their work, and also cruising numerous alleys myself, I've found that it doesn't sell if it's not mainstream. That's just how it is. You're lucky if you get a couple hits on fanart of stuff -you- personally like. Of course ... D. Gray Man and Vocaloid are pretty popular right now so I could be wrong. Still. It counts in everything: the best way to make money is to sell yourself out. And it sucks. Take commissions from fangirls wanting yaoi. That's where the money is.

And that's why I don't sell in artists alleys! \o/

But hey, who knows. That con might have a different scene than I'm used to. I'm just saying from what I've experienced. It's the sad truth :\

If there's anything I could call myself out on, it's my pride. I like sticking to my own guns, even if they don't agree with what's hip and in. I'm sure out of a mass group of kids there will also be an adult fan base that are looking out for stuff besides the mainstream. Since I'm sure most other booths are going to dominantly sell Naruto, Inu Yasha, and other 'in' anime based goods, having someone like myself sing to a different choir might be a good asset. ( Of course like you said, I probably won't be as successful. Hence I'll just be making limited quantity of older anime based items and more of the recent titles. )

I'm not so sure about yaoi, because the area I live in is one of the bigger conservative areas in Michigan. So my chances of having to draw man penis tongue lashing is under 50 percent.
( thank god. XD )

Thanks Laura!

Ah I was mostly pointing out what works; also to be ironic. I can't find anything decent to buy in the artists' alley because of all the half-cocked fanartists out there! Some of them are good though, but most of them are just sell-outs. I'm happy you don't wanna be like that, even if it means you don't make as much money. More power to ya!
